(BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA) - Officials believe an Indiana man flying a small single engine plane to Florida intended to crash.

Florida officials say 38-year-old Marcus Schrenker radioed distress to flight controllers, put the aircraft in autopilot, and parachuted safely to the grown near Birmingham Alabama.

The plane, which took off out of Anderson crashed in Santa Rosa County, Florida.

Alabama authorities say Schrenker informed them he had been in a canoeing accident with friends and was taken to a hotel in Harpersville where he checked in under a fictitious name, then later fled into the woods close to the hotel.

Local state, and federal officials continue to search for Schrenker while the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board investigate the crash site.
