(INDIANAPOLIS) - It seems like every child wants a puppy or kitty for Christmas, but surprising your child or partner with a one under the tree might not be a good idea.

Indianapolis Humane Society Executive Director John Aleshire says dogs and cats are lives that we have to care for, so it needs to be a family decision to get a pet. He says the shelter is a good place to go if you're ready for a pet because there are counselors on hand to help you find the best pet to fit your lifestyle.

Also the holidays add extra risks when it comes to food and your pet. Aleshire says it's not a good idea to feed the dog or cat off the holiday dinner table and pet owners need to take extra care in putting candy and cookie trays out of their pets reach.

If your pet does get into the Christmas fudge, he says you should contact your vet.
