Police Lower Criminal Charges Against Mother

Last updated on Thursday, December 11, 2008

(MUNCIE) - Muncie police are lowering the preliminary criminal charge against the mother of a diabetic second-grader who died the day after Thanksgiving.

Authorities are reducing the charge against 29-year-old amber Sky Bertram from neglect of a dependent causing death to simple neglect.

Sgt. Linda Cook says she abandoned the initial charge after doctors told her that 8-year-old Kaitlyn Borson may have died as a result of a medical error.

Police say Bertram had a history involving child services for failure to properly manage her daughter's health. She was originally jailed without bond on the first charge -- but has since been released on $5,000 dollars bond.

Cook says the investigation remains open.
