Mother Receives 2 Years In Prison For Abandoning Son At Wal-Mart

Last updated on Tuesday, December 23, 2008

(FRANKFORT) - The mother who abandoned her three-year-old son at a Wal-Mart store in Frankfort has been sentenced to two years in prison.

39-year-old Julia Ornelas of Tipton left her son, Julian, at the store on June 13 with a note in Spanish asking whomever found him to take care of him.

She was arrested in Indianapolis in August and pleaded guilty to felony neglect charges in Clinton County court last month.

In her sentencing hearing Monday, Ornelas said she was desperate when she left her son at the store. He is now 4 years-old and remains in foster care.

Clinton County Superior Court Judge Kathy Smith said an overwhelmed person doesn't leave a child at a Wal-Mart; they leave them at a church, a hospital, a police station or some other safe place.
