Gold Coin Dropped In Johnson County Red Kettle

Last updated on Monday, December 22, 2008

(LEBANON) - Someone has dropped a South African coin in on of the Salvation Army’s red kettles in Johnson County.

The coin is identified as a 1978 gold krugerrand worth an estimated $850.

Salvation Army Spokesman Mike Rowland says it a great gift from the donor. It's the second year the Salvation Army has received a gold coin in the kettle in Johnson County.

Similar coins have been dropped in buckets this year in Evansville and Chicago.

Rowland says the coins are taken to an appraiser then sold with proceeds going to the Salvation Army.
