(UNDATED) - Your next BMV photo could end up looking more like a mugshot — but the BMV says it’s for good reason.
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is restricting hats, glasses, scarves, and even big smiles in driver's license photos in order to use facial recognition software that can spot fraudulent license applications.
The applicant's photograph will be compared with old photographs on file to protect customers from identity fraud.
BMV Spokesman Dennis Rosebrough says customers can petition to leave on headdresses in photos for religious reasons -- and can also request a non-photo license or identification card.
Indiana is one of about 20 states using the technology.
