Crime Stoppers Looking For Tips... From Criminals Themselves

(PENDLETON) - The Indiana Department of Correction is teaming up with Crime Stoppers to pilot a project behind prison walls.

The Crime Stoppers web site is feeding a live video stream about unsolved crimes to closed-circuit television at the correctional facility in Pendleton. Offenders are being encouraged to submit anonymous tips by calling a special telephone number and entering a code.

It's the same system that's been used by Crime Stoppers for years in the general population--with one difference. In this case, cash rewards will be paid to the tipster's designee outside the facility.

The IDOC is the first state corrections agency in the nation to try this. If the pilot project is successful, the program may be expanded to all IDOC facilities.
