(UNDATED) - A former science teacher, coach and administrator is the next Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Tony Bennett's victory over Democratic candidate Dr. Richard Wood marked one of few bright spots for the Indiana Republican Party on election night. Bennett fills the role of Dr. Sue Ellen Reed -- who held the office for 16 years.

The State Superintendent serves as the chairman of the Indiana State Board of Education and implements K-12 education laws passed by the state legislature.

In the other major statewide race, Republican Greg Zoeller defeated Democrat Linda Pence for Attorney General.

Zoeller served as Deputy Attorney General under current AG Steve Carter.
