New Terminal At Indianapolis Airport To Open Today

Last updated on Tuesday, November 11, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Workers have been scurrying around the Indianapolis airport’s new terminal, putting on the finishing touches before Tuesday’s grand opening.

Painters are touching up ceilings, many of the self-service terminals have big holes where the monitors should be, and Starbucks is still unloading big boxes of cups and lids.

But the airport will be ready for a 1PM ribbon-cutting, and for the arrival of the first flight about seven hours later.

"It's like sending a kid off to college," says midfield terminal project director John Kish.

"You've done everything you can do to make it successful, and off we go (to) see how the real world treats it."

Kish says the airport could have opened Monday if it had to.

Most of the last-minute work involves the new terminal's restaurants and shops.

The first arriving flight had been scheduled to be an ATA charter bringing 100 Indiana National Guard soldiers from the 76th infantry brigade home from a tour of duty in Iraq.

But a guard spokeswoman says mechanical problems delayed the soldiers' plane in Kuwait, and they're now scheduled to arrive a few hours after the first commercial flights.
