Hoosier National Guard Soliders Return Home

Last updated on Thursday, November 6, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - About 80 Indiana National Guard soldiers are being met with hugs and kisses after returning from Iraq.

Loved ones welcomed home the first of more than 3,200 members of the 76th Infantry Brigade combat team at Stout Field Wednesday following a seven-month mission in Iraq.

Lt. Col. Deedra Thombelson says it's a feeling that's hard to describe. She says soldiers, their friends and family members are often overcome with emotion.

The soldiers are spending the next few days attending debriefing and mental health counseling sessions at Camp Atterbury -- part of the Army's plan to smooth out veterans' return to civilian life.

The next group will return November 11th with all soldiers expected to return by December 7th.
