Annexation Battle Continues Between Fishers And Geist Residents

Last updated on Tuesday, November 25, 2008

(FISHERS) - The annexation battle between Fishers and Geist has reached a Hamilton County courtroom.

Hamilton Superior Judge Steven Nation is hearing three days of witnesses on whether Fishers' plans for the affluent area would represent an undue burden on its residents or duplicate existing services.

Fishers contends its annexation bid simply unifies an area that already uses town services. The town cross-referenced databases to show several signers of the anti-annexation petition take part in rec-sports programs in Fishers parks.

An ordinance has been introduced to ban nonresidents from those programs if the annexation fails.

Town attorney Doug Church argues this year's tax-reform package means most Geist residents wouldn't even see a tax increase. Members of Geist United Opposition disagree -- they point to predictions the annexation would pay for itself, and contend a tax increase is the only thing they'd gain from annexation.

A ruling isn't expected until after Thanksgiving.
