(INDIANAPOLIS) - Lead Poisoning Prevention Awareness Week has kicked off.

The Marion County Health Department's Live Safe and Healthy Homes Administrator Carla Johnson says everyone should be aware of all possible risks of lead poisoning.

Johnson says the biggest risk is within the home. Houses built before 1978 could have lead paint, and she adds that lead paint is usually found in kitchens and bathrooms.

Johnson says lead paint could also affect the soil outside the home if it chips off over the years. She says children and pregnant women are most susceptible to lead poisoning.

She says a blood test is the best way to determine if you've been poisoned. Many health departments across the state are holding lead screening events throughout the week.
