New VA Center Opens, Assists Homeless Vets

Last updated on Tuesday, October 28, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis has a new 50-bed rehabilitation treatment center for homeless veterans.

The center is located in the blue triangle building, formerly the YMCA of Indianapolis, on North Pennsylvania Street.

Linda Jeffrey with the VA Center says homeless veterans will have the use of private rooms with a shared kitchen, dining, living room and activities area for up to 90 days. Several private rooms are reserved just for female veterans.

Jeffrey says it's not permanent housing, but is intended to give them peer support, medical help and vocational skills to get back on their feet again.

Jeffrey says the VA has hired more staff and health care professionals for the new center who specialize in working with homeless veterans.
