(UNDATED) - Farmers and landowners in the northern part of the state are seriously considering an alternative crop: electricity.

The northern region is best suited for utility-scale wind farms, especially northwest of Lafayette, east of Muncie and northwest of Indianapolis.

The "Fowler Ridge Wind Farm" in Benton County is currently the largest wind power site in the state. And Indianapolis Power and Light announced they will break ground in December for their "IPL Hoosier Wind Farm", also in Benton County.

The technology has gotten a boost nationally from billionaire oil man T. Boone Pickens who is spending millions on an ad campaign supporting wind energy.

Justin Schneider, an attorney with Indiana Farm Bureau, says they will soon host meetings in Jasper and Allen Counties to provide information and answer landowner's questions about wind energy development.
