(UNDATED) - A new survey of Indianapolis residents 55 and up shows a lack of knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease.
It also indicates conflicting attitudes and behaviors about taking action. Dr. Ann Hake with the IU School of Medicine says respondents had trouble identifying the symptoms of the progressive brain disease.
Although most said they would encourage a loved one to get screened for AD, many failed to take action when the situation actually occurred in their lives. Dr. Hake says the primary symptom of AD is a consistent loss of memory that's bad enough to interfere with daily activities.
She recommends a website, seethesigns.com, that helps screen for symptoms of the disease.
Alzheimer's is expected to grow by 20% in the state over the next two years, affecting 120,000 Hoosiers.
