Furnace Tune Up Could Save Hoosiers 5% On Bills

Last updated on Wednesday, October 1, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - “Make sure your filter is clean and changed.” That advice comes from Rick Fitzgerald with Dial One Hoosier plumbing and heating who also says, “more importantly, get that all-important pre-season tune-up done” by a professional.

Low temperatures in the 40s are arriving this week in Central Indiana. You can set back your thermostat a few degrees, but Fitzgerald says a proper tuneup of your furnace is the best move you can make to save money on heating bill this winter. He promises a savings of about five percent and maybe more, depending on the condition of your furnace.

An old furnace with rust in the burners will still fire up, but Fitzgerald says it could be a fire hazard. He also warns against the use of space heaters, especially those that run on oil or gasoline.

He recommends the electric version with safety features like an automatic shutoff that engages when the heater is tipped over.
