(UNDATED) - Several state and federal law enforcement agencies have made an arrest in what they call a large scale identity fraud case.
FBI Special Agent Wendy Osborne says Kevin Michael Stewart has been arrested for extortion stemming from a 2006 burglary of an Indianapolis medical office. Stewart allegedly stole a computer server from Medical Excess LLC, which is a member of AIG.
The server contained the personal information of 900,000 people from all over the country. He is accused of trying to extort over $208,000 thousand dollars from AIG.
Osborne says Stewart also faces a new federal extortion charge since the information was stolen from a protected computer system. She says Stewart is the first person in the country to be charged under the new statute.
Osborne says investigators feel the personal information was not accessed by anyone else, but they continue to look into if Stewart used any of the information.
He is set to appear in federal court later this week. He is currently in federal custody at the Marion County Jail.
