(INDIANAPOLIS) - The historic 82nd street bridge on the northeast side of Indianapolis has re-opened.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard joined the family of Hoosier astronaut David Wolf to officially re-open the bridge.

The 1942 bridge named the David Wolfe Bridge is on the national register of historic places. Mayor Ballard says its significance is not only for being named for the Hoosier astronaut, but for it serving as the main route for troop movements in the '40's.

Wolf could not make it to the re-opening due to training for another NASA mission, but he did express, through his family, that driving across the bridge makes him every bit as proud as a flight in a NASA spacecraft.

Ballard also says the re-opening will help significantly with the holiday shopping traffic in the area.
