IDEM Recommends Against Burning Leaves This Fall

Last updated on Friday, September 26, 2008

(UNDATED) - For many Hoosiers, it’s a traditional smell of the fall season: burning leaves. But state environmental officials say the smoke from those fires affects air quality.

The Indiana Department of Enviornmental Management says the elderly, young children and individuals with respiratory or heart ailments are particularly vulnerable to the fine particle emissions.

IDEM spokesman Robert Elstro says some Hoosiers may not even be allowed to burn leaves in areas suffering from drought conditions.
