Arthritis Foundation Funding Fellowship For Child Doctor

Last updated on Tuesday, September 16, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana chapter of the Arthritis Foundation will sponsor a three-year fellowship for a pediatric rheumatologist.

The fellow will be able to learn the fine details of rheumatology for children by diagnosing patients and doing research at Riley Hospital For Children.

Dr. Suzanne Bowyer with Riley says there are only 3 such doctors in the state trying to serve 6,000 children so the extra set of hands are greatly needed.

The fellow will allow the doctors to travel away from Indianapolis serving patients throughout the state, adding convenience for struggling families.

Bowyer says treating children dealing with arthritis and other chronic joint pain is different than treating adults because their bodies and daily activities are very different.

The Arthritis Foundation will fund the fellowship for a three year period with the hopes the doctors will continue to serve Indiana after completing their program.
