(EVANSVILLE) - State police say a man from Southern Indiana's Posey County recently lost $250,000 dollars in a sweepstakes scam.

Sgt. Todd Ringle says the victim received mail claiming to be from a company called Embassy International that said he had won a giant first prize of $5.5 million dollars. Police say the man sent scammers more than $250,000 dollars in separate payments before realizing that it was a scam.

Authorities are not releasing the identity of the scam victim from the county just west of Evansville.

Ringle says this severe case should remind Hoosiers that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. State police say that before sending money to an unfamiliar organization, contact the Better Business Bureau.
