City Council Up In Arms Over Prayer

Last updated on Tuesday, August 19, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The controversy over prayer at Southport city council meetings appears to be far from resolved.

Last month, all five council members walked out of the meeting when Mayor Robin Thoman refused to open with a prayer. They eventually reached a compromise and agreed to open the meeting with a moment of silence.

One man stood up immediately and said a moment of silence is not a prayer and he was escorted out by police. A handful of others walked out on their own and said they might start a petition drive to have prayer restored to the meetings.

Sherri Receveur said she's the one who suggested a moment of silence to the mayor but she said she meant it should still be like a prayer.

Councilwoman Rose Harrison said if the mayor continues to be overzealous, they're going to have trouble.
