Ballard Tour Altered After False 911 Call

Last updated on Friday, August 1, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A report of a burglary in progress in the house next door interrupted Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard’s tour of a rehabbed showcase home on the southeast side.

As his security detail whisked him away, officers and two K-9 units converged on the house. Two people from the house were briefly detained, but the suspect who was wanted for battery and possession of a firearm wasn't there.

Lieutenant Jeff Duhamell of the Indianapolis Metro Police Department blames the incident on a miscommunication with the 911 caller who tipped police. But Mayor Ballard speculated it was a false 911 call and was upset that so many police resources were diverted from other duties to handle it.
