(VINCENNES) - A once-in-a-lifetime restoration project will take place at the George Rogers Clark Memorial in Vincennes.
Extensive repairs will be made starting next month to the terrace and access steps. Park Superintendent Dale Phillips says the memorial's terrace will be dismantled and a new drainage system will be installed.
Crews will replace damaged concrete and steel, then waterproof the surface. Phillips says the terrace has had problems with leaks since it was constructed in the 1930s.
The monument will be closed to the public during the year-long project, but the park's visitors center will remain open. The normal $3 entrance fee will be waived during the work and special events hosted by the park will continue.
The monument was dedicated June 14, 1936. It was operated by the state until it was turned over to the National Park Service in 1966.
The monument contains murals and a statue of Clark, a Revolutionary War hero who led a small force to capture the British fort at Vincennes along the Wabash river in February 1779.
