(TERRE HAUTE) - Terre Haute International Airport has temporarily abandoned its radar system because of a 10-foot security fence that's causing false radar signals.

The airport is relying on a backup radar site near Indianapolis.

Airport Director Tom Long says along with the fence problem, the radar is unable to see aircraft flying below 3,500 feet. Long says he's working with the Federal Aviation Administration to find a solution.

FAA investigators will visit the airport in the coming months to figure out which section of the fence is causing the problem. Long says a different style fence will likely be built in its place.

The security fence was originally built to keep deer and other wildlife from coming across the airfield.
