Wall Collapses, Crushes Construction Workers

Last updated on Friday, June 27, 2008

(GREENWOOD) - A wall fell on five construction workers in Greenwood Thursday afternoon, leaving three dead.

They were working on a concrete block and mortar wall on a warehouse under construction at Dayton Freight, near Allen Road and Commerce Parkway, about a mile east of I-65.

Greenwood Police Chief Joe Pitcher says severe storms moved through the area at the time and a nearby barn was blown down but it's unclear if it was a factor in the wall collapse. "We're investigating it as any other death investigation," said Chief Pitcher, " and we're working with the Indiana OSHA officials to make sure there are no worksite violations involved."

Names of the victims were not immediately released.

Pitcher said there have been two work- related deaths in Greenwood in the last four years, but nothing of this magnitude.
