(INDIANAPOLIS) - Kids out of school on summer vacation means homework for you. Time for a refresher course on keeping your kids safe whenever they're home alone.

Shirley Purvitis with the Indianapolis Metro Police Department says first it's important to make sure your kids feel comfortable about being home alone. Be aware that peer pressure is a factor, so ask them about it privately instead of in front of their friends.

Know who your kids summertime friends are, how to contact their parents and how they can contact you.

Remind them again of all the basic outdoor safety rules you grew up with, such as "stop, look and listen" before crossing an intersection.

A good source for more summer safety tips for kids of all ages is the American Academy of Pediatrics web site at aap.org
