(UNDATED) - Indiana’s trying to give away $326-million dollars.
Indianaunclaimed.com lets you search the state's database of abandoned securities, bank accounts and other money waiting for the rightful owners to step forward.
The last seven years, the state has given back an average of $26-million dollars a year, but taken in more than twice that much in new money: the attorney general's office used to hold auctions at the state fairgrounds to get rid of non-cash items found in abandoned safe-deposit boxes. Since 2006, those auctions have been held nonstop on the unclaimed-property website, bringing in a total of $135,000 dollars. Auction proceeds go into the database -- the original owners have 25 years to claim the cash.
The state's holding money for $1.4-million Hoosiers. Most of those claims are for 100 bucks or less, but there are 2,400 people with more than 10,000 dollars waiting for them.
