(HAMMOND) - There’s a fresh round of legal questions about Hammond’s new red-light cameras.
Hammond's city council approved cameras to catch red-light runners, despite arguments that the legislature may need to specifically authorize letting a camera catch you instead of a cop.
After getting a look at the final ordinance, the Indiana Supreme Court's technology committee has a different concern: the ordinance treats violations as the equivalent of a parking violation, not a moving violation. That means violators can pay a fine without getting any points on their licenses.
Judicial Technology and Automation Committee Director Mary Deprez says Indiana could lose $34 million dollars in federal grants if the ordinance doesn't meet national standards.
