Indiana Locks Up More Kids Than 44 Other States

Last updated on Friday, June 13, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana puts more juveniles behind bars than 44 other states.

The Indiana Youth Institute says Indiana incarcerates 46% more offenders under age 16 than the national average. Three-quarters of those offenders are nonviolent -- that ranks 13th in the nation.

Institute President Bill Stanczykiewicz says that's nothing to be proud of. He says other states use alternative sentencing to hook up nonviolent offenders with social services.

He says those programs have proven effective in reducing repeat offenses. Stanczykiewicz says Allen and Bartholomew Counties have gotten good results from alternative sentencing programs.

A Marion County program is just getting underway.
