Hoosier Smoking Down 18%

Last updated on Tuesday, June 3, 2008

(UNDATED) - Indiana has the sixth highest rate of cigarette smoking in the nation. But the Department of Health says cigarette consumption has dropped nearly 18% since the state increased the tax on tobacco products last July.

Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Judy Monroe says the drop is what the Department of Health predicted would happen if the cost of cigarettes increased.

Karla Sneegas with Indiana Tobacco Prevention Cessation says a second summer-long "Quit to Win" contest is underway. Hoosiers who want to stop smoking can sign up to win cash prizes. They'll be tested after 30 days with the top three finalists sharing $5,000 in cash prizes.
