Beachgoers Rush To State Park Pools, Beaches

Last updated on Monday, June 2, 2008

(UNDATED) - Summer’s here in all but name, and state parks are ready to welcome beachgoers.

30 of the 33 state parks and reservoirs have beaches or pools. All but one of them opened for business on Memorial Day. Mounds State Park in Anderson has been renovating its pool and opened Sunday.

Department of Natural Resources Spokesman Phil Bloom says some pools won't start their full sunrise-to-sundown schedule till this week. Some areas haven't quite finished the school year, and there's not enough traffic to stay open all day.

Similar trends will mean reduced hours at some pools a couple of weeks before the season ends on Labor Day.

Blume says the resumption of school also means the high school students who make up much of the lifeguard corps won't be available any more. The Indiana Dunes State Park on Lake Michigan is the only state beach with lifeguards. 17 others allow visitors to swim at their own risk.
