Personalities Camp Out On Speedway Infield For Homeless Awareness

Last updated on Thursday, May 15, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Wheeler Mission is launching “Operation Restoration” at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

It's designed to increase both awareness and funds for wheeler mission which has run critically short of cash since February.

To kick off the effort, Indianapolis media personalities will camp out on different nights this week in the Speedway's infield.

Steve Kerr with Wheeler Mission says they've seen a dramatic increase in the number of homeless women and children asking for help. Kerr says of the more than 2,000 people who are homeless in Indianapolis every night, over 500 are now women and children.

Kerr says this is just the first of a series of fund raising events for Wheeler Mission that will run through November. They're hoping the publicity and community involvement will help them raise $1 million dollars in the month of May alone.
