Memorial Day Celebrations Costing Hoosiers More

Last updated on Monday, May 26, 2008

(UNDATED) - That back yard barbecue is going to cost you more this Memorial Day than it did last year.

Lew Middleton with the Indiana Farm Bureau says meat products alone are up 13% over a year ago. Some blame ethanol use, but Middelton assures there is plenty of corn to go around. He says the real reason food prices are up is because of the cost of energy, more specifically diesel prices.

If ethanol were to go away today, Middleton says gas prices would increase by 40 cents a gallon. He says that's because ethanol is a component in the gasoline we burn here in Indiana.

If your looking for a buy this Memorial Day, Middleton says stock up on potatoes. They're down 7% from a year ago.
