Lake County Residents To Receive Rebate Checks... This Time With Money

Last updated on Monday, May 19, 2008

(CROWN POINT) - 29,000 Lake County homeowners can expect a fresh round of property-tax rebate checks.

Lake County was the only Indiana county with a tax circuit-breaker last year which capped property taxes at a percentage of a home's value. This year's property-tax reform law will take those caps statewide.

In Lake County, Governor Daniels says the combination of the local circuit-breaker and statewide tax rebates led to some confusion, and the county ended up holding onto $10-million dollars that should have gone out to taxpayers. The state has now ordered those checks sent.

Daniels says most homeowners already have their rebates, but some either didn't get them or were shortchanged on the checks they did receive -- including several who received checks for zero dollars.

Lake County was one of seven counties which successfully completed its reassessment last year but had not finished sending rebate checks by the end of April.

In Laporte County, the rebates have been delayed by a belated challenge to the entire assessment. The State Department of Local Government Finance held a hearing last week in Michigan City, and is expected to rule Thursday on whether to order the county to redo the assessment.

The DLGF has said the county could send the rebates anyway, but county officials have said they intend to wait until the state assures them the numbers are final.
