(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Motor Speedway starts celebrating it’s centennial era in late February 2009 with a huge party in Downtown Indianapolis.
The speedway officially opened in 1909. IMS President Joie Chitwood unveiled a new retro-styled centennial era logo which will be used only for the next three years.
Chitwood said a completely re-designed highway interchange will be built, eliminating the Crawfordsville Road exit off of I-465 and creating a new front door into the town of Speedway. Crawfordsville Road will be extended to meet 16th Street south of the track. 400 acres southwest of IMS will be re-developed to include a retail and business corridor along main street in Downtown Speedway and a park will appear just west of the track on what is now Georgetown Road.
The Speedway will host a two day balloon event the first weekend in may next year. The first competitive event held at the track was a hot-air balloon race.
The IMS brass says more plans will be announced later, culminating in the 100th anniversary of the Indy 500 in May 2011.
