(INDIANAPOLIS) - Two- time Indy 500 winner and Dancing With The Stars champion Helio Castroneves was the keynote speaker Wednesday at the 2008 Spirit of Service awards dinner to benefit Catholic Charities of Indianapolis.
Castroneves said he was happy to return to Indianapolis to support Catholic Charities and talk about giving back to the community. "It's a recognition of everyone giving their time, their donation and things like that." said Castroneves.
Five individuals and one corporation were honored with Spirit of Service awards to recognize their work in striving to improve the lives of the community's most vulnerable.
This year's honorees include Prisca Arredondo, Theodore and Beatrice Davis, Constance Merkel, Doris Parker and Shiel Sexton.
Catholic Charities Indianapolis programs served more than 28,000 individuals in 2007 through three key service lines: eldercare, crisis relief and shelter and individual and family support. Among those served, the majority are families with children who live below the poverty level, according to the archdiocese of Indianapolis. 70% of those served are not catholic.
