(INDIANAPOLIS) - A University of Indianapolis researcher is making international headlines with her investigation of a century-old serial killer case in LaPorte County.
Andrea Simmons hopes she's unearthed the remains of Belle Gunness -- one of the world's most prolific serial killers.
The former U-Indy grad student says she's been interested in the case since she was a child growing up in LaPorte County.
Historians believe Belle killed at least 20 people -- husbands, boyfriends and children for life insurance money before she was killed in a house fire in 1908.
Some say she faked her death to evade police and kill again. Simmons wants DNA to give us a final answer.
The Indiana State Police crime lab is analyzing evidence from the excavation site to see if the case can be solved.
