(UNDATED) - Move over. That’s the message state police want to get out to motorists this month.
Patrols will be directed toward drivers who fail to move over or reduce speed for stopped emergency vehicles. Those vehicles include police vehicles, ambulances, fire and rescue, highway incident-response vehicles, highway workers and tow trucks.
Indiana became the first state in the country in July 1999 to enact a law requiring motorists to move over or slow down when approaching stopped emergency vehicles.
A billboard is posted around Indiana depicting the mangled Indiana State Police car of Sergeant Richard Kelly of the Lafayette post, who survived after his police car was struck when he had a motorist pulled over.
