(ANDERSON ) - There’s been a shake-up in management at the Madison County Animal Shelter.
Animal rights groups complained to Anderson Mayor Kris Ockomon after the city's animal shelter recently euthanized 28 dogs without explanation.
Ockomon says that the shelter's Senior Humane Officer Larry Russell didn't give a reason for why the dogs were euthanized.
Russell and the Deputy Humane Officer, Brad Cox were placed on administrative leave last week. However, Russell resigned Monday, stating he felt the incident caused "irreversible harm to public trust."
Currently, four veterinarians are running the shelter. The city is now considering privatizing the shelter.
Ockomon is exploring business models in other counties.
The mayor said the city would try to structure the shelter similar to the way the Hamilton County Animal Shelter is modeled, where they are subsidized but still privately run.
The future of the Anderson Animal Shelter will be discussed in a public meeting on April 9.
