(ANDERSON) - An Anderson woman is living among the homeless animals of Madison County in hopes of saving the place that has saved thousands of lives.
Rhonda Estes is the Adoption Coordinator at the Humane Society. She has decided to imprison herself for one month, living inside the shelter in an effort to raise awareness and money.
Estes sleeps on an air mattress near cages housing the facility's more than 100 dogs and cats.
The facility is at risk for closure because of severe financial problems.
A former worker is accused of taking $65,000 and that has depleted the shelter's operating expenses. Estes is hoping to collect at least $10,000 to operate the shelter for at least one month.
Donations to date total $6,000.
