Property Tax Plan May Beat Buzzer

Last updated on Friday, March 14, 2008

(STATEHOUSE) - Look for a vote on the property tax reform package today.

A number of people have been worried that it would happen before the end of this year's legislative session, which ends today, and some legislators may have also been worried about having it done in time to watch the Hoosiers and Boilermakers in their Big Ten Tournament games as well.

The conference committee has announced details of their tax plan. As a quick run down, look for a 1% bump in sales tax, and a 30% average cut in property tax bills.

Daniels' tax caps did make it through to the final version, which could cause concern in local governments.

A while back, Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis told a Chamber Third House session that the tax caps, as they existed at the time, would cut the city's budget by almost $2 million over the next 2 years.
