(LINCOLN CITY) - Planning for the bicentennial, which marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, has been underway for several years, but Mother Nature had her own agenda.
The national inaugural event was set to open several weeks ago at the cabin site in Kentucky, where Lincoln was born. But a snow storm forced national park officials to cancel the program and by a process of elimination, the second national event, planned in Indiana, now becomes the inaugural celebration. The event will take place on Mother's Day, May 11th.
Indiana's Lincoln Bi-Centennial Committee Chairperson Connie Nass says that day was selected because of the significance Lincoln's mother had on his life. The program is a televised event.
Along with the many celebrations in Spencer County, Nass said the state commission is planning major events all across the state.
