Council Trying To Bring Attention To Problem Gambling

Last updated on Wednesday, March 12, 2008

(UNDATED) - This is National Problem Gambling Week.

Jerry Long with the Indiana Council on Problem Gambling says it's hard to determine how many problem gamblers there are in Indiana, however, 2,300 people are voluntarily registered on an exclusion list prohibiting them from entering Indiana's 11 casinos.

Long says problem gambling isn't exclusive to any specific type of gambling and often friends and family don't know someone has a problem until they have hit rock bottom and are in a financial and/or legal crisis.

The council works to make resources available for people to get help. A portion of the tax casinos pay the state goes into a fund for resources, however Long says that fund is being tapped for alcohol and drug programs.

The council working on a comprehensive plan to address problem gambling in Indiana.
