(INDIANAPOLIS) - With some training, ambitious armchair meteorologists can become volunteer storm spotters.

Dave Tucek with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis says their two-hour course sharpens your weather observation skills. Spotters learn interpretation of cloud structures and severe weather radar, the type of information to report to authorities and storm safety tips.

The weather service welcomes storm damage reports from anyone. That information goes into their database which insurance companies use to verify storm-related damage claims.

If you're really bit by the storm spotter bug, more advanced courses are available. There's even a storm spotter symposium on March 1st in Greenwood.

Tucek says training is offered in most counties in Central Indiana. Check the weather.gov website for the class location close to you.
