(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Putnam County sheriff's ombudsman has been sentenced to a year-and-a-half in prison for winning two federal grants for the department -- and keeping the money.

Federal prosecutors say George Alexander applied for two grants totaling $45,000 dollars, apparently without telling anyone. When the Justice Department approved the money, authorities say Alexander put it in his own bank account.

Alexander pleaded guilty to federal program fraud. Prosecutors also accuse him of draining money from the department's block grant funds, and buying a water heater for his house and charging it to the department.
