Nutritionist Discusses Winter Food Trends

Last updated on Friday, February 1, 2008

(UNDATED) - If you broke your New Year’s resolution for warm comfort food, don’t feel bad.

Nutritionist Dr. Gary Moore says we need a little bit more carbohydrates during the winter than in the summer because carbs help keep the body warm.

Dr. Moore says you can still get the carbs you need to keep warm without adding to your waistline by eating carbs with a low glycemic index, which is the measure of sugar release in the body.

Moore says hot foods like soups and stews can help the stomach act like a "pot-bellied stove" warming the rest of the body.

Moore says what we eat can also help our moods, fighting off the winter blahs. Proteins turn the amino acids in the body which can help promote relaxation and sleep.
