Indiana Near Last In Green-State Survey

Last updated on Tuesday, February 5, 2008

(UNDATED) - Forbes Magazine ranks Indiana 49th among America’s greenest states.

Only West Virginia is less green when it comes to air and water quality or clean energy production.

Most green law proposals have died in the legislature this year. One that remains alive is a House bill requiring Indiana to become a member of the Climate Registry. That's a voluntary reporting system for greenhouse gas emissions adopted by 40 states so far.

State Representative Ryan Dvorak of South Bend says failure to work with the registry could put Indiana at a competitive disadvantage because federal regulations of greenhouse gases are inevitable. Proponents says the state could be penalized for failure to meet those federal standards. The bill is awaiting action in the senate.

And which state does Forbes magazine call the greenest? It's a tie, between Vermont and Oregon.
