"Tumbleweeds" Creator Hangs Up His Pen

Last updated on Tuesday, January 1, 2008

(MUNCIE) - Indiana’s second-most-famous cartoonist has hung up his pen.

Anderson native Tom Ryan drew "Tumbleweeds" for 42 years. He worked out of a studio in Muncie for 17 years before moving to Florida in 1982.

The wild west strip about Tumbleweeds the cowboy and Indians Limpid Lizard and Bucolic Buffalo ran in 350 newspapers at its peak. Sunday's final strip appeared in fewer than 90.

"Garfield" cartoonist Jim Davis got his start as an assistant to Ryan.

The National Cartoonists Society twice named Ryan one of the year's top humor artists.
