(STATEHOUSE) - The governor wants immediate and permanent tax relief. He’s going before a house committee today with the proposal presented Tuesday night in his State of the State address.
Mitch Daniels proposes to cut residential property taxes by about one-third by 2009, cap on homeowners' bills and revamp what he calls a "hopelessly unfair" assessment system.
Daniels urged lawmakers to reach agreement even earlier than their March 14 deadline dictates, on February 26th, when former Governor Otis "Doc" Bowen turns 90.
Daniels says passage of property tax reform would be "an excellent birthday present and a fitting tribute to Bowen."
The plan, already being heard in senate and house committees, has garnered a lot of opposition, including from business groups angered that homeowners' bills would be capped at 1-percent while businesses' property taxes would be capped at 3-percent.
